The new Made in Sheffield at Millennium Galleries is now open and we’re delighted that it features a piece from our Gleam Pewter Collection – the award-winning Groove bowl by Miranda Watkins, who is one of our talented guest metalwork designers. Claire Starkie, Curator of Decorative Arts at Museums Sheffield felt the piece stood out so much that it will become part of their permanent collection.
Described as a dazzling celebration of the internationally-renowned making and manufacture that takes place in our 21st century city, we’re honoured to be part of Made in Sheffield. Our last-a-lifetime pieces in pewter certainly fit the bill with their long-lasting lustre.
For the Gleam collection Miranda was inspired by the spinning process in our factory and wanted to create pieces that celebrated our pewtersmiths’ skills. With its clean lines, swooping curves and a high-shine finish, the design certainly exploits our craftsmen’s techniques to the maximum. There’s a seeming simplicity about the style, but don’t be deceived, it can take a lifetime to learn how to spin a handcrafted piece like the Gleam bowl. It’s no surprise that the collection – featuring vases, bowls, candlesticks and napkins rings – was the winner of The Eureka Design award 2008.
We’ve been involved with Millennium Gallery since it opened to make sure that 21st century pewter collections are well represented alongside antique Sheffield pewterware. Several exclusive pieces, available only through the Gallery such as the Turtle Box and our specially commissioned Knife, Fork and Spoon collection, have been a great success in their shop.
The Made in Sheffield exhibition forms part of The Year of Making, a year long, citywide programme celebrating Sheffield’s international reputation for innovation and excellence in making.
